GOP Memo: Goal For Climate Debate Is ‘Making Political Points’»

At 11 PM last night, following the eight-hour marathon reading on the Senate floor of the Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act forced by Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) revealed the existence of a GOP strategy memo on the climate debate.

The anonymous memo, provided to Reid “by a lobbyist involved in Republican strategy meetings” and obtained by the subscription-only E&E News, admits that the only goal of the Republican caucus is obstruction and grandstanding:

The goal is for a theme (e.g. climate bill - higher gas prices) each day, and the focus is much more on making political points than in amending the bill, changing the baseline text for any future debate, or affecting policy.

The full memo explains the GOP strategy to obstruct and delay action:

As Senator Reid said in response:

Mr. President, you could not make anything up more cynical. This is the truth and they say truth is stranger than fiction, and this certainly is.

The Republican strategy has always been to prevent the Democrats from moving forward on legislation. McConnell made this clear in a public speech. It is no different on this bill. What seems to be lacking is a unified Democratic response. The Democrats should be running ads on television in every competitive house and senate race with excerpts of the strategy document and McConnell’s speech. They need to make it known that the only way to get action is to give the Democrats a larger majority. You start it at the house and senate race level. When McCain cannot control racist attacks on Obama by 527’s and state parties, the Democrats can simply question his abilities as a leader in being unable to control his obstructionist party.

  2. Servius Says:

Actually, Republican politicians have been unpopular with Republican constituents because the politicians have been either behaving like Democrats or not fighting the Dems effectively.

It’s nice to see some spine from the GOP.

btw. I wonder what you guys will do when you realize you’ve been had on Catastrophic Global Warming.

  3. Howlerdog Says:

Servius: Specifically what will make us realize we’ve been had? Please enumerate the points.

  4. Servius Says:

I’m not going to do your homework for you but a little more brains and a lot less myopicness.

  5. LiberalVoter Says:

Howlerdog, forget about getting a real answer from a troll. If they bother to answer, it us usually tripe like the one here or one that points to BBC4, the bastard relative of Fox. When they act like this, rather than looking for a real discussion, ignoring them is the best option.

  6. Dilla Says:

Servius — I think the word you’re looking for is “myopia”.

  7. Servius Says:

“LiberalVoter”, I’ve tried discussions with your ilk but find you all impervious to logic. Thousands of scientists disagree with the Global Warming crowd and publish all over. Of course, your next step is to prattle on about consensus (despite the aforementioned disagreement) and conduct an ad hominem against anyone who would dare disagree.

Oh, yes, myopia may have been better than coining my own word but I got my point across.

  8. LiberalVoter Says:

My point is proven. No content, just tripe about a bunch of debunked mindless drivel. Time to move on.

The brilliant GOP strategy works well with the ambition to reduce themselves to extinction.
