Five former US Secretaries of State, including McCain adviser Henry Kissinger, urge direct talks with Iran as the best way of dealing with that country. Note that current Defense Secretary Robert Gates thought much the same thing before he joined the government. Resistance to this approach is now limited to a pretty small fringe that, unfortunately, happens to include some influential politicians.
