Tom Daschle withdrew from consideration. Presumably for “family reasons”.
I think this is probably for the best as far as Barack Obama’s lasting credibility–and therefore effectiveness–goes. Optically, though, it would’ve been better if Daschle had withdrawn sooner, and if Obama hadn’t spent the last several days reiterating his support for the man. As far as health care goes? I’ll leave that to others, but I can’t imagine that the prospects for major health care reform are any worse now than they were an hour ago.
