President of Israel is a largely ceremonial “head of state” office, but it gives you a platform to talk, and the current holder of the office, Shimon Peres, has been a big shot in Israeli politics for a long time. So Peres has been speaking out about the current situation and it seems some right-wing members of the Knesset want him to shut up:
The Knesset’s right-wing parties on Thursday demanded that President Shimon Peres tone down his comments regarding the peace process and refrain from holding meetings on the matter, saying that such meetings were “outside the president’s job description.”
Earlier Thursday, Peres met with EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana and said that Israel and the US should move on to the second stage of the Road Map peace plan and establish a Palestinian state with provisional borders, which would become permanent “in a short span of time.”
Well, I’m not going to comment on adherence to Israeli political norms since it’s not something I’m knowledgeable about, but it seems to me that it’s important for Israel that someone is talking about a desire to make peace.
