The Lady Gaga Strategy

CNN tells us about the latest GOP youth initiative, white dudes whining about taxes over Lady Gaga’s beats:

The parody video was developed by Peter Cowman, a 23-year-old who just graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle, outside Rep Dave Reichert’s district. A spokeswoman for Reichert said the congressman wanted to show his colleagues the video to encourage them to get young people involved using new media, and noted his district is home to a cluster of technology companies.

“He wanted them to encourage the youth in their district, and share the message on a level that young people can relate to,” Reichert’s spokeswoman told CNN.

Asked about the video, House Republican Conference Chairman Mike Pence, R-Ind, laughed and said “it’s part of the Pence youth initiative.”

What’s interesting about this particular youth outreach angle is how detached it is from any actual opinions held by young people. From David Madland and Ruy Teixeira:

The fact of the matter is that younger people tend to support the Democrats because younger people have opinions on almost every issue that are more left-wing than average. To court that demographic, Republicans will either need to moderate their agenda or else try to raise the salience of some kind of currently suppressed issue. Taking the same “taxes are evil” message and putting it in music videos isn’t going to get very far.
