Yesterday, trying to persuade someone that the burqa predates the Taliban, I googled up this 1968 National Geographic photo that I won’t produce out of respect for intellectual property. The caption reads “Reflecting the forces of change at work in the land, Afghan law no longer requires the chadri, whose pleats echo a style of centuries ago.”
