Football Metaphors and Approval Ratings

There’s a lot to disagree with in Charles Krauthammer’s latest column, but I’d rather think about football so let’s just consider this. Krauthammer says the reason Obama is so unpopular is that “In a country where politics is fought between the 40-yard lines, Obama has insisted on pushing hard for the 30.” Compare that to Obama’s approval rating:

obamaapproval 1

49 percent approve and 45 percent disapprove. Both of those numbers are higher than 40 but lower than 50. That seems exactly like fighting between the 40 yard-lines. To find someone aiming at the 30 you’d have look at the later Bush years.

Maybe Canadians shouldn’t be constructing football analogies?
