Rethinking Crosswalks

Is it time to rethink crosswalk design to better reflect how people walk?

My beef with crosswalks in the contemporary American urban environment is that the “white paint on a street” paradigm carries the implication that the shared cars/people space is really meant for cars and the pedestrians are just visiting and crossing the road. This is a shared space that’s used for walking just as often as it’s used for driving, and the demarcation should clearly indicate as much.
