And Another Thing I Don’t Quite Understand…

Is the trajectory of Jason Lee’s career. Is he convinced that the road to greatness lies in bad Southern accents now, or something?

With the exception of Almost Famous, Lee has always struck me, like Ben Affleck, as someone who has always seemed somewhat lost when he isn’t working with Kevin Smith (who, himself, seems pretty artistically off the rails). As an actor, Lee’s line readings often have an edge of artificiality, something that suits him well in roles where he’s repressing emotions ranging from artistic jealousy to longing for heaven to sexual desire. He sounds artificial for a reason in those parts. But there’s something off about that edge when he’s talking to a little girl whose help he needs in solving a case — it sounds like he’s just grating, which is not exactly going to win a huge amount of sympathy for him as a main character. I do wish he’d find his way back to one of those deeply felt roles again. He’s got such potential. I hate to see him kicking around in mediocre work.
