Local media in Oregon are reporting that Gov. John Kitzhaber (D) will soon announce his resignation following revelations that his fiancée Cylvia Hayes is also a registered lobbyist who may have steered lucrative contracts to businesses she advised. The news comes just two days after the four-term governor told reporters he had “no intention of resigning.”
A criminal investigation by the Oregon Attorney General into Kitzhaber and Hayes into Kitzhaber’s and Hayes’ conflicts of interest is ongoing.
When Kitzhaber steps down, Secretary of State Kate Brown will take his place. Brown reported earlier this week that Kitzhaber asked her to fly back early from a conference in DC only to ask her why she had returned, leading some to question his memory and mental state.
“I am ready, and my staff will be ready, should he resign,” Brown said.
