A prominent conservative British activist has broken ranks with his allies on the “religious right” and declared his support for marriage equality, the Independent reports. “Marriage is probably the most important Conservative institution and excluding people from it is therefore excluding people from Conservativism to a significant extent,” Tim Montgomerie, a member of the Tory party, told the paper. “Marriage is an institution at the centre of society. It is because I value it so much that I want it to be extended.” In 1990, Montgomerie “founded the influential Conservative Christian Fellowship (CCF),” which is now leading the campaign against same-sex marriage. Britain will consider the issue later this year.
