In the alternate universe where the United States no longer uses an arcane process of choosing presidents which inflated the electoral power of slave states, President-elect Hillary Clinton has rested from her comfortable victory over Republican candidate Donald Trump, and is well on the way to selecting her entire cabinet. All 50 states and the District of Columbia have now counted their popular votes, and the result isn’t even particularly close.
Of course, here in this universe, the fact that Trump lacks democratic legitimacy is not sufficient reason to hand the White House to the woman who won the popular vote. Nevertheless, the fact remains that Clinton won the popular vote by nearly 3 million.
There are a number of reasons why the last votes were not tallied until so late after the election. In some states, including California, absentee votes may still be counted even if they arrive some time after election day. Disputes and uncertainty can also arise over provisional ballots.
