Congressional Republicans plan to ram through legislation to repeal the Affordable Care Act this week, despite not having anything in place to replace it. As a growing number of Republicans and groups like the American Medical Association warn that carrying out only half of their “repeal and replace” promise could be disastrous for millions of Americans.
On CBS Face the Nation on Sunday, Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) succinctly explained the GOP leadership’s strategy.
“This is akin to shoving someone off the cliff,” he observed, “and as they’re falling down, saying: ‘Don’t worry! We’re gonna figure this out before you get to the bottom.’”
Booker noted that Donald Trump has repeatedly promised a magical replacement plan for Obamacare that is going to be “terrific.”
“If they have a plan, put up your plan. Show the American people,” he urged his Republican colleagues.
Even Trump’s campaign website section on healthcare reform makes clear that a full repeal of Obamacare is insufficient, noting “it is not enough to simply repeal this terrible legislation. We will work with Congress to make sure we have a series of reforms ready for implementation that follow free market principles and that will restore economic freedom and certainty to everyone in this country.”
