Divide Between Best And Worst Paid American Workers Is Widening

According to data from the Labor Department, the income divide between Americans with the highest- and lowest-paid jobs is increasing. As the Wall Street Journal noted, “earnings of Americans at the top — meaning those who earned more than 90% of all workers — rose 7%, before adjusting for inflation. During the same period, wages of those at the bottom — meaning those who earned less than 90% of all workers — rose 2.5%.” In 2010, the richest 1 percent of Americans captured 93 percent of the nation’s income gains.
