Economy Added 113,000 Jobs In January; Unemployment Fell To 6.6 Percent

The economy added 113,000 jobs in January while the unemployment rate fell to 6.6 percent, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Analysts had expected 180,000 jobs to be added.

December’s numbers had been a huge disappointment, with the addition of just 74,000 jobs despite an expected 196,000. Those were only revised up by 1,000.

In January, the biggest job gains were in construction (48,000), manufacturing (21,000), services (36,000), and leisure and hospitality (24,000). Government employment was down 29,000.
