CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA — For the first time since nine people were shot and killed during a Bible study Wednesday evening, Charleston’s historic Emanuel AME Church reopened its doors Sunday morning for prayer and worship service, conducted by Elder D. Norvel Goff. A diverse crowd gathered in the blistering sun, where it felt like it was over 100 degrees. Inside, the church is at capacity; congregants furiously fan themselves as they sing together. Outside, others are distributing water and hugs to each other as flowers pile up on the memorial for the victims.
