ExxonMobil Will Offer Benefits To Same-Sex Spouses

ExxonMobil announced Friday that it will begin offering spousal benefits to married same-sex couples in the U.S. beginning January 1. According to the company, “all legal marriages” will be recognized according to their place of celebration.

The announcement is a big shift for ExxonMobil, which is known for being one of the most anti-LGBT companies in the country. Shareholders have repeatedly defeated proposals to institute nondiscrimination protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The company is also facing a lawsuit from Freedom to Work, which found evidence of the company discriminating against LGBT job candidates.
