A federal appeals court struck down key sections of Alabama’s immigration law in a ruling released today, including a provision mandating that school officials check the immigration status of newly enrolled students. And the 11th Circuit ruled that Alabama and Georgia cannot punish people for harboring or transporting an undocumented immigrant. Following the Supreme Court’s ruling that allowed a somewhat narrowed version of Arizona’s “Show-Me-Your-Papers” provision to go into effect, the appeals court let Alabama and Georgia to begin enforcing a law allowing state and local police to investigate the immigration status of certain suspects.
