Federal Grants Aiding Low-Income Families To Expire In 17 States On Friday

On Friday, 17 states benefiting from supplemental grants under the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program will see those grants expire. This will be the first time that the supplemental grants have expired since they were enacted in 1996. As the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities noted, the states — including Texas, Mississippi, Georgia, and North Carolina — are “some of the poorest in the nation, with child poverty rates averaging 22 percent.”
