First Half Of Dream Act Goes Into Effect

AB 130, the first half of California’s Dream Act, which lets undocumented students receive private grants and scholarships, officially went into effect Jan. 1, which the California Department of Finance estimates will help 2,500 students. And a state law barring city and county governments from requiring private employers to use E-Verify to check an employee’s immigration status also went into effect. At the other end of the spectrum, Alabama, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and Louisiana had immigration laws or provisions of laws go into effect on Jan. 1 to require wider use of E-Verify.
