Conservative pundits have spent the past several days fear-mongering about the 7,000-person strong migrant caravan making its way to the southern U.S. border.
On Monday morning, Fox & Friends host Brian Kilmeade argued that the outrage against the group should equal the outrage against the alleged murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi by Saudi officials.
“Democrats should be just as outraged at this as they should about the Khashoggi killing,” Kilmeade said. “This should be one thing that should bring both sides together and say ‘we should have integrity at our borders.'”
Earlier in the program, Kilmeade continued to bash the caravan, which includes thousands of mothers and children from Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala, for not emigrating the “right way,” ignoring the fact that seeking asylum at a port of entry is a completely legal form of immigration.
Kilmeade also incorrectly stated that the majority of asylum seekers disappear into the country without showing up for the immigration court hearings.
“But, right now, what they’re doing is en route to coming here, claiming asylum, then thanks to the Flores amendment, they get their 20 days in detainment only, then we gotta give them an ankle bracelet and let them loose,” Kilmeade said. “Ninety percent of them cut the bracelets off, we never see them again.”
Alternatives-to-detention (ATDs), like ankle monitors, are 99.8 percent effective when it comes to getting immigrants to show up for the court hearings and mandatory check-ins with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Kilmeade is far from the only person on Fox News spreading misinformation about the migrant caravan. The network has hosted talking heads over the last few days to repeat talking points made by President Donald Trump.
Former ICE supervisor Jason Piccolo told Fox News Monday that the military should be deployed the border “as soon as possible” — echoing a Trump tweet from last Thursday.
….In addition to stopping all payments to these countries, which seem to have almost no control over their population, I must, in the strongest of terms, ask Mexico to stop this onslaught – and if unable to do so I will call up the U.S. Military and CLOSE OUR SOUTHERN BORDER!..
