Getting Lost

I think I’ve mentioned a couple of times here that I never really played video games in any serious way. The one game I did spend any substantial time messing around in was Myst, which apparently is now going to be a movie.I never finished Myst or honestly even got close. I actually don’t think I was ever trying particularly hard to get to the end. Instead, I enjoyed the contemplativeness of the landscape and the sounds, the dreamy sense of being entirely alone, but in some place more expansive than my town or school or home. It was enough just to wander around someplace strange and beautiful. I felt no intense compulsion to actually figure things out. I think that’s part of the reason I’ve always been intrigued by the fantasy game in Ender’s Game: I wonder what the game designed for me would have looked like, what my private interior universe might have been, what challenges I might have been confronted with. If anyone has suggestions for games that have a similar effect, or affect, really, that kind of calm exploration, please let me know. I’d kind of like to give Myst, or something similar, another shot, perhaps with a little bit more adult direction behind my efforts.
