Colin Powell, both Republicans themselves, offered support for he move. “The country and our men and women in uniform would be well-served by his swift confirmation,” Gates said. “Chuck displays his courage in many ways,” Powell said in a statement.”You can always count on him to analyze a difficult situation and take a position that reflects his best judgment.” Hagel also received the support from two top Senate Democrats, Dianne Feinstein and Carl Levin. “Senator Hagel is well qualified to serve as secretary of defense with his broad experience in national security affairs,” Levin said in a statement.
