Apparently there’s some strand of rightwinger out there ideological enough to actually oppose efforts at helping Haiti. Personally, that just sounds bizarre to me. But apparently they’re in touch with Tyler Cowen and he has an excellent reply:
Imagine U.S. troops liberating Buchenwald. Would any commentators say the following? “Don’t give him that blanket, sell it to him!” “Hey buddy, get a job!” “Moral hazard: they’ll just go get captured again.” etc. I don’t think so.
Meanwhile . . . this is probably pushing the analogy too far, but it’s perhaps worth noting that an important part of the post-Holocaust resolution of the problems of Central European Jewry was emigration to North America and Israel. Not that the entire population of Haiti should be sent to live someplace else or anything, but one of the simplest things foreigners can do for Haiti is make it easier for Haitians to come and live there.
