A conservative donor and hedge fund manager is financing attack ads against Wyoming senate candidate Liz Cheney for supporting equal benefits for some gay and lesbian couples.

The 30-second spot, titled “Wrong for Wyoming” criticizes Cheney for appearing on MSNBC — “the go-to network for Barack Obama and Washington’s liberal elites” — to oppose a constitutional amendment defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman and backing a State Department decision extending “benefits to the same-sex partners of Foreign Service employees.”

“Liz Cheney, wrong for Wyoming,” the spot concludes. Watch it:

American Principles Fund, a SuperPAC dedicated to advancing an “integrated conservatism” that demonstrates how “social issues are winning issues,” is behind the ad.

The group appears to be funded by Sean Fieler, hedge fund manager who has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to organizations opposing marriage equality. Fieler told the New York Times earlier this year that gay and lesbian marriage “promotes a very harmful myth about the gay lifestyle. It suggests that gay relationships lend themselves to monogamy, stability, health and parenting in the same way heterosexual relationships do. That’s not true.”

Despite opposing a federal amendment, Cheney herself opposes same-sex marriage and was recently criticized by her openly-gay sister Mary for saying states should be able to outlaw marriage equality.
