How Big a Deal Is Pedestrian Safety?

Transportion 4 America released a cool new report this week about pedestrian safety offering maps and rankings of who’s doing this right and how the worst places can improve. But I wondered how big a deal this problem really is. Matt Cameron, Intern to the Blogging Stars, offers the following data:

In other words, this is hardly the biggest public health problem the nation faces. But pedestrian accidents absolutely dwarf such newsworthy occurrences as plane crashes and hurricanes. These kind of drip drip drip problems are exactly the sort of thing we under-invest in dealing with.
