I See White People

Wesley Yang reviews Nell Irwin Painter’s History of White People. Ta-Nehisi Coates also comments and offers this excellent video of Painter talking:

I find that these days sophisticated Americans are generally aware of at least the broad outlines of the process by which racial boundaries are redefined over time, but there’s often a naïve assumption that this process has either stopped entirely or else that the next move on it will be a simple dismantling of all racial barriers. Painter seems much closer to the mark here and I’m going to order the book.
