Immigrant Families Occupy The Republican National Committee

On Wednesday, protesters gathered at the Republican National Committee in Washington, DC, to demand an immigration system that does not break apart tens of thousands of families. Much of the focus in the immigration debate has been on skilled workers, but the family-sponsored immigration system requires equal attention: More than 4 million people are currently waiting in the backlogs of the family-sponsored immigration system, and 1,100 people are deported every day.

Record deportations affect the two-thirds of undocumented immigrants who lived in the U.S. for decades and have spouses, children, and families who are citizens. And a central piece of the current debate is ensuring equal treatment for same-sex families, something Republican leaders have resisted.
