Iranian Authorities Cracking Down On Barbie

Back in the mid-’90s, the Iranian regime banned the sale of Barbie dolls, “denouncing what they called the un-Islamic characteristics of the uniquely American doll.” The anti-Barbie campaign eventually subsided but the AP reports today that, in the wake of rising tensions between the West and the Islamic Republic, authorities in Iran are once again cracking down on Barbie. Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency says that police “confiscated Barbie dolls from toy shops in Tehran in a ‘new phase’ of its crackdown against ‘manifestations of Western culture.’”
