- The Justice Department has resumed investigating urban police departments for “systematic civil rights abuses such as harassment of racial minorities, false arrests, and excessive use of force,” a role DOJ largely abandoned under President Bush.
- Justice Stephen Breyer sold as much as $50,000 in Wal-Mart stock in order to participate in a class action suit involving the giant retailer.
- The Canadian Supreme Court held that a person cannot consent in advance to sex while they are unconscious. The decision was 6–3.
