Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), facing a tough re-election fight against Democratic Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, surprised a local sportstalk host Wednesday morning by calling into the program. But during the interview, McConnell refused to answer basic questions about climate change and same-sex marriage, prompting the host to mock the senior senator after he hung up the phone.
Asked by Kentucky Sports Radio host Matt Jones whether he believed in global warming, McConnell dodged the question and argued that America could do virtually nothing to stop carbon emissions unilaterally. Forsed to explain, McConnell dismissed the question:
JONES: That’s a yes or no question. Do you believe in global warming?
McCONNELL: No it isn’t. It is not a yes or no question. I am not a scientist. I know there are scientists who think it’s a problem and scientists who think it isn’t a problem… my job is to try to protect jobs in Kentucky now. Not speculate about science in the future.
Jones then asked McConnell about the growing number of states that now have marriage equality. McConnell responded by saying only that he believed marriage should be between opposite-sex couples. Pressed, McConnell again refused to explain himself. Listen to audio of the interview:
After the impromptu conversation, Jones ripped McConnell for his non-responses, calling him a “consummate politician”: “You’re against gay marriage, why? ‘Well just cuz.’ Cuz is not an answer.”
