Maine Secretary Of State Approves Marriage Equality Ballot Language

Maine’s Secretary of State has approved the language for a ballot initiative to allow same-sex marriage in the state. Campaign volunteers and supporters can now begin collecting the 80,000 signatures required to put “An Act to Allow Marriage Licenses for Same-Sex Couples and Protect Religious Freedom” on the November 2012 ballot. If the measure qualifies for the ballot, it will be the first time the state’s voters will have the opportunity to approve rather than ban marriage equality, as Maine did in 2009.
