Maryland Governor Will Sponsor Marriage Equality Bill In Next Session

Following New York’s lead, Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley (D) announced that he will sponsor same-sex marriage legislation in 2012, promising to give equal protection to “religious freedom.” He said that the bill will be an “administration priority” and expressed optimism that “we can come together,” adding that he was “honored” to lead the marriage equality coalition. O’Malley had been supportive of a marriage bill this past session (that ultimately failed), but did not publicly lobby for the measure.
