At least one person is dead and three wounded following a mass shooting near a polling place in the Los Angeles County city of Azusa, California. The Los Angeles Times reports that some of the victims were headed to vote when shots rang out.

The shooting reportedly occurred just after 2 p.m. local time in a residential neighborhood. Authorities described the suspect as a woman armed with a semiautomatic firearm, though witnesses who spoke to the Times described the suspect as a man. As this is published it remains unclear whether more than one suspect was involved.

The Azusa P.D. provided the following timeline of events.

The Times reports that the suspect ended up surrounded by police after retreating to a house, and was recognized by a witness who lives in the area.

The polling place near where the shooting took place was locked down, and so were some area schools. Los Angeles County Registrar Dean Logan advised voters to avoid the area and use other polling locations. Logan later reported that the polling location at Dalton Elementary School “is open and operational,” while the one at Memorial Park remained closed.

A short time after this post was published, the Azusa P.D. confirmed that officers have barricaded the suspect.

A Los Angeles County-based photojournalist later tweeted these images.
