Mississippi’s Only Abortion Clinic Sues To Stay Open

A new Mississippi law goes into effect on July 1 that is designed to make it nearly impossible for the state’s only abortion clinic to remain open. In the spring, legislators approved the Republican-backed measure to require the clinic’s doctors to have hospital admitting privileges, and the bill’s sponsor wants the clinic to be inspected as soon as the law goes into effect to force it to close sooner. Now, the clinic is suing, alleging that the law is unconstitutional because effectively outlaws abortion in the state “by imposing medically unjustified requirements on physicians who perform abortions.” Doctors have applied for privileges at area hospitals, but have not received them.
