Does he think the entire country has forgotten about the 1990s?

On Friday, in an appearance at the National Press Club, Newt Gingrich said it was impossible for the President of the United States to obstruct justice.

Gingrich’s pronouncement comes as special counsel Robert Mueller is, according to President Donald Trump as well as media reports, investigating Trump for obstruction of justice.

During the late-1990s, Gingrich pushed for the impeachment of President Bill Clinton and repeatedly accused him of obstruction of justice:

After questioning Clinton’s use of executive privilege as well, Gingrich then delivered a similarly harsh address before his former political committee, GOPAC. “What you have lived through for 2 1/2 years is the most systematic, deliberate obstruction of justice, coverup and effort to avoid the truth we have ever seen in American history, and the time has come to say to the president, ‘Quit undermining the law in the United States. Turn over the evidence,’ “ he said.

Although Gingrich resigned as speaker after humiliating loses in the 1998 Congressional election, the House later impeached Bill Clinton on obstruction of justice charges.

Here is the official vote tally. On December 19 at 1:56PM, Gingrich voted to impeach President Clinton for obstruction of justice.

Gingrich, after initially praising Mueller, has become a harsh critic. “Mueller is now clearly the tip of the deep state spear aimed at destroying or at a minimum undermining and crippling the Trump presidency,” Gingrich tweeted Thursday.

Gingrich speaks regularly with Trump and is promoting a new book on how to “understand” him.
