After numerous indictments and accusations, former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort is heading to prison.
Judge Amy Berman Jackson ordered Manafort to prison on Friday, revoking Manafort’s $10 million bail, which had previously permitted Manafort to remain on house arrest.
The order follows fresh rounds of allegations and indictments from the office of Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who accused Manafort of attempting to tamper with witnesses regarding ongoing investigations into Manafort’s history of secret, unreported lobbying. Manafort’s efforts, which amounted to “obstruction” according to Mueller’s office, included contacting witnesses via encrypted messaging.
Mueller’s office last week also charged Manafort’s longtime Russian confidant, Konstantin Kilimnik, with obstruction. Mueller’s office has described Kilimnik as a Russian intelligence asset who was active through the 2016 election.
Manafort’s jailing is perhaps the most significant blow to the former Trump campaign manager — but it’s by no means the last. He is still facing nearly 20 additional criminal charges regarding his offshore finances.
Trump has not yet commented on Manafort’s jailing, but said Friday morning that he “feels bad” for his former campaign manager.
It is unclear where Manafort will be imprisoned.
