Public Sector Layoffs Hit Record High In 2011

Layoffs of public sector workers hit a record high last year, with 183,064 workers losing their jobs due to budget cuts in the wake of the Great Recession, according to an analysis by the consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Private sector layoffs accounted for nearly one-third of total jobs lost. These numbers don’t take into account 120,000 proposed layoffs at the United States Postal Service.
