George Zimmerman is trying to sell the gun that he used to kill Trayvon Martin to the highest bidder. It’s not going well.

Zimmerman initially listed the weapon on GunBroker.com. The auction was removed from the site minutes after it began, however. “We want no part in the listing on our web site or in any of the publicity it is receiving,” the site said in a statement.

Zimmerman then moved the auction to United Gun Group, another gun auction site, which promptly crashed for several hours. The site eventually came back online and released a statement saying it would allow the auction to proceed:

But Zimmerman’s troubles were just beginning. The bidding on United Gun Group was quickly overwhelmed by trolls including ‘Racist McShootface’ and ‘Weedlord Bonerhitler’ who have helped drive the current price of the gun to over $65 million.

To its credit, United Gun Group “reminded” Zimmerman — should he actually sell the gun to a real person — only to ship the gun to someone who holds a federal firearm license (FFL) and can conduct a background check. (Two private individuals can have a sale facilitated through a licensed dealer, who has the ability to conduct a background check). The message seems to be getting through. “This firearm will be shipped through my FFL dealer directly to your FFL dealer. NO exceptions,” Zimmerman wrote in his latest auction.

In his initial GunBroker.com listing, Zimmerman expressed willingness to complete the transaction without conducting a background check. Although you can only ship a handgun to a licensed dealer, it is possible that Zimmerman could exploit a loophole in the background check system by making the transaction in person to someone in Florida.

Since Zimmerman’s acquittal in 2013, he has been involved in multiple domestic violence incidents, briefly launched a new career as a painter and posted a picture of Martin’s dead body on Twitter. The gun, which was recently returned to Zimmerman from the Department Of Justice, is probably his last hope of cashing in.
