San Francisco police are searching for gunmen who shot four high school students at the end of the school day on Tuesday. One of the victims is in critical condition.

According to local reports, four men opened fire in the parking lot of City Arts and Technology High School and June Jordan School for Equity, which are housed in the same building. The intended target was a 15-year-old female student who was shot in the upper torso, but three others were hit as well. As the shooting unfolded, students scrambled to hide in their classroom, taking cover under desks.

The targeted victim is currently fighting for her life in a nearby hospital, but the three other victims — all male students — were also hospitalized for less threatening injuries.

School resumed this morning, but students are still shaken up by the incident.

“You don’t know if somebody’s going to die the next day,” student Nia Gastinell told CNN. “Or come back and shoot again into our school.”

For most students nationwide, school has been in progress for less than two months. But school shootings have already claimed the life of a 6-year-old boy in South Carolina and wounded multiple students in Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, and Texas. In September, one high school student was shot in the head.

According to Everytown for Gun Safety, 64 gun-related incidents happened on school grounds last year.
