The same day that an activist group questioned why U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton hasn’t publicly spoken out about Saudi Arabian women’s campaign for the right to drive, a State Department spokeswoman said Clinton was engaged in “quiet diplomacy” on the subject. Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the issue was raised in a phone call with the Saudi foreign minister. “I think she is making a judgment on how best to support universal rights for women,” said Nuland. “There are times when it makes sense to do so publicly and there are times for quiet diplomacy.” An unnamed administration official told CNN Clinton was waiting to see if Saudia Arabia would be responsive.
