All TJX stores, including T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, and Sierra Trading Post, will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, a spokesperson confirmed to ThinkProgress.

“We consider ourselves an Associate-friendly Company, and, we are pleased to give our Associates the time to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends,” she said. Most Marshalls and T.J. Maxx stores will open at 7 a.m. on Black Friday, November 28th, with about 25 opening at 5 a.m. HomeGoods stores will open at 7 while Sierra Trading Post stores will open at 6.

That makes nine national brands that have resisted the recent trend of beginning holiday shopping on Thanksgiving itself, joining American Girl, Burlington, Dillard’s, Coscto, GameStop, Nordstrom, Patagonia, and REI. Dillard’s, Costco, and GameStop all also explained their decision to stay closed on the holiday as a way to give employees the time to be with their friends and family.

Other stores will make their workers come in. Walmart will be open all day, meaning nearly 1 million employees will go to work, and it will begin Black Friday deals in the evening. Macy’s will open for holiday shopping at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. At least 10 other brands decided to do the same last year. While the stores say shifts are filled by volunteers, some Kmart employees reported that their requests to take the day off were rejected last year.

Employees also have little power over whether they can stay home on holidays, as they aren’t guaranteed paid holidays, unlike their peers in other developed countries. Service sector workers are particularly unlikely to get the benefit, as 45 percent of them don’t get paid holidays at work. Even those who elect to come in may not do it out of holiday cheer, but out of the need to get more hours given that retail schedules are often so sparse that employees struggle to get by.
