The NBA’s Smartest Team Decided To Make A Woman Their Head Coach This Summer

Today, the San Antonio Spurs announced that Becky Hammon will serve as their head coach during the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. It is the first time a woman has been the head coach for an NBA Summer League team.

Hammon, a former standout player in the WNBA, serves as an assistant coach for the Spurs during the regular season. She is the first full-time female assistant coach in league history.

The Spurs are widely regarded as the smartest and best coached team in the NBA. Many of the best coaches in the league were either players or assistants for their legendary head coach, Gregg Popovich. Their tactics and strategies are widely imitated throughout the league.

Hammon’s selection appeared to be welcomed by players, including Portland Trailblazer All-Star Damian Lillard:

The Summer League team generally includes the team’s draft picks, younger players and veterans seeking to make it onto the final few roster spots.  In an interview with the San Antonio Express-News, Hammon was all business. “I want to work on getting our guys better. It’s got to be about them,” she said.
