While President Donald Trump’s high-profile supporters use the sexual assault allegations against now-Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh to fret about mob rule and the purported end of the presumption of innocence, the president’s fans chanted for the extrajudicial imprisonment of a female senator who played a central role in the Kavanaugh scandal during a rally on Tuesday in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
“How about Senator Feinstein? That’s another beauty,” Trump said. “That’s a beauty.”
Trump proceeded to mockingly mimic Feinstein in a manner similar to how he once mocked a reporter with a disability: “‘Did you leak the documents?’ Wha wha, what what? No! I didn’t. Did we leak? Did we leak? Wha, no–”
While the president grinned and laughed, his fans then broke out in a chant — one they usually direct toward Hillary Clinton.
“And I think they’re talking about Feinstein, can you believe it?” Trump quipped, as a “lock her up!” chant thundered.
The “documents” to which Trump referred is a letter Dr. Christine Blasey Ford sent to Feinstein’s office detailing her sexual assault allegation against Kavanaugh.
Ford asked Feinstein’s office for confidentiality, and there’s no evidence anybody associated with the senator played a role in leaking the letter to the media. During her Senate testimony, Ford applauded Feinstein for the way she handled the matter.
Of course, even if Feinstein had leaked Ford’s letter, it wouldn’t be a crime.
Hours after the rally wrapped up, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway went on Fox & Friends and accused Democrats of “marinating in a toxic brew of rancor and bitterness for quite a while.”
