On Monday afternoon, President Trump issued a thinly-veiled threat against Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA).

“Congresswoman Maxine Waters, an extraordinarily low IQ person, has become, together with Nancy Pelosi, the Face of the Democrat Party,” Trump tweeted. “She has just called for harm to supporters, of which there are many, of the Make America Great Again movement. Be careful what you wish for Max!”

Trump’s characterization of Waters’ comments is a lie. She did not wish “harm” upon Trump supporters. Instead, at a rally in Los Angeles on Saturday, she responded to Press Secretary Sarah Sanders being asked to leave a restaurant in Virginia by urging people to make it uncomfortable for Trump cabinet members to be in public.

“Let’s make sure we show up wherever we have to show up. And if you see anybody from that Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd,” she said. “And you push back on them. And you tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere. We’ve got to get the children connected to their parents.”

Trump has repeatedly called Waters “a low IQ individual” during recent speeches. In April, a man pleaded guilty to threatening to kill Waters because of her opposition to Trump.

“If you continue to make threats toward the president, you’re going to wind up dead, Maxine, ’cause we’ll kill you,” the man, Anthony Scott Lloyd, said in a voicemail her left for Waters.

Barely two months later, Trump is misrepresenting Waters’ comments to falsely suggest she wished “harm” upon people like Lloyd, and urging her to “be careful.”
