Local police have arrested Eric Black, Jr. and charged him with capital murder in the shooting that killed 7-year-old Jazmine Barnes on Dec. 30 in Houston, Texas. A second man, Larry Woodruffe, was also arrested and has not yet been charged.

Jazmine’s mother LaPorsha Washington was driving with her four children on an early-morning coffee run when she says a pickup truck pulled up alongside her car, and someone began firing a gun into their car. Washington was struck in the shoulder and Jazmine was fatally shot in the head.

Investigators told local media they believe the victims weren’t the intended target, and they may have been attacked in a case of mistaken identity.

Police initially believed they were looking for a white suspect, after Jazmine’s sisters described the shooter as possibly white. A sketch artist created a composite drawing that appeared to show a white man.

Local police say a tip led to the arrests of Black and Woodruffe.

After Jazmine’s death, celebrities and athletes began pledging money to the family, and thousands of people donated to a fund to help Jazmine’s family with her funeral costs. A rally on Saturday drew hundreds of well-wishers and concerned community members.
