UN: Syrian Refugee Count Now Above 500,000

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees announced today that there are more than 500,000 Syrian refugees. There is no sign that the increase will stop: the U.N.H.C.R tweeted this morning that “every 27 seconds, a Syrian is registered as a refugee.” A spokesman added that the timing couldn’t be worse given the weather conditions, saying that “winter can be extremely harsh, particularly when you’ve got people already weakened by the ordeal of coming out of Syria.” What’s more, reports indicate that neighboring countries are less than thrilled to continue to welcome the refugees.
